The image-cache feature was deprecated in 4.1 and removed in 4.2. But I believe it was just a cache on the input images, so it wouldn't have really helped in your scenario. I think you have two options. One, add more RAM / switch to a machine with more RAM. Or two, stitch smaller portions of the pano separately and then merge them.
