Just a suggestion: maybe it would not be a bad idea to somehow include the recommended 70 % (I know it's the default, but not for the Expert mode) downscale setting directly in the Hugin UI. You are the first one which propose this. Until now all request were to ignore or remove the 70 % downscale option. But this is currently yet possible: When you press the "calculate optimal size" button with pressed control button the downscale option from the preferences is used.
