There's no doubt in my mind that the immediate post war period led to many novel and secret initiatives on the technical front. As trusting citizens we may like to feel this is in our interests- but a big caveat is - what transparency exists in this lengthy, expensive & largely hidden process? ( see MP's expenses likewise). The fact that Hum goes back so far highlights the fact that we are way behind in the knowledge stakes as to what is being done for us, to us and around about us. The internet is redressing this 'awareness deficit'- but 50 years is a hell of a long time to catch up on.
