The foil covered foam pad is pressed hard against a wall in some upper part 
of the house. This goes to one connection of an AC volt meter. For the 
second connection I used an earth rod in damp soil in the garden. I used a 
digital volt meter purchased from Aldi stores for about £7. It would be 
advantageous if the voltage could be fed into some form of recording 
device, taking manual readings is very time consuming
