Hi Chandni, Homeless citizens have always been treated as invisible people by the state. Various advocacy efforts have created a positive space for the homeless citizen within the state administration. Our organization 'Alternative Realities' has been lobbying with the Mumbai Mantralaya for ensuring the rights & dignity of the homeless citizens in Mumbai. Recently the government of India has agreed to do the census of homeless citizens across the country. I have interacted with the Director & Deputy director of the census operation-Maharashtra. They are requesting for our support to identify locations where homeless citizens sleep. On February 28th the actual census will take place in Mumbai. Around 26000 enumerators will visit different locations in the night and do the census. There are more than 100,000 homeless citizens in Mumbai as per our survey. It is a great challenge to reach out to the whole population in one night. I shared my concern with the officials but they have limited resources. It is commendable that the state has at least greed to acknowledge the presence of the issue of homelessness in a city like Mumbai. On February 28th it is very important to be with the enumerators to ensure the accurate counting. 6-7 NGOs have join hands and organizing meeting with other stakeholders at different locations. We need volunteers to participate in this census process. This census gives us great opportunity to participate in such a massive government exercise, be the voice of the voiceless and learn. I would like to share that my interactions with the homeless citizens have made me a better human being and helped me learn a lot about the life. The volunteers will gain an overview of the homeless issue, support them to get official visibility and embark on the journey of self discovery. We can organize a meeting of volunteers, census officials and share further details. It would be great if you can circulate it among your friends and help us reach more and more people.
