I think there is no question at all that the RSS and its sympathisers participated in a big way in the Anna Hazare movement. The signs were everywhere besides the public claims made by the organisation itself.
The question is however what such participation meant in terms of the character of the entire movement which was on the secular issue of corruption indulged in by elected representatives and state agencies? While I disagree with the idea being promoted that the Jan Lokpal Bill is a panacea of any kind for corruption in this country I would say that the demand or the mobilisation in its support cannot be dubbed communal unless one believes that the entire thing was somehow directed selectively against corruption amidst religous minorities! If at all the presence of so many Hindu religious gurus agitating against corruption is a good sign because the practice of Hinduism of the Brahmanical variety is entirely based on corruption through the concept of 'dakshina' to the gods (nee Brahmins) for escaping punishment of sins committed. I would also point that there was considerable participation in the Anna Hazare movement by forces of the Left (like the CPI ML Liberation) as well as centre-left such as NAPM along with many citizens who wanted to vent their anger against one of the many kinds of corruption that happens in this country. I think they were right to participate and to call them handmaidens of communal forces would be both dishonest and stupid. The fact of the matter is that for many decades now in this country the biggest anti-Congress force has been the Hindu Right and there is no escaping the fact that even a significant section of the Congress agrees with Hindutva. Besides in terms of cadre base and organisational strength and spread the RSS and its various fronts are way ahead of every other political force and it is time the rest of us woke up to this fact and did something about it instead of doing some silly analysis of 'communalism spotting'. With their strength the RSS can today take advantage of every movement that happens, I mean if the Maoists somehow come to power they might say 'Well done! After all it is a party led by Brahmins!'. So my humble suggestions is that we stop this playing with words and get on with the task of defending the Indian Constitution, the rights of dalits and minorities by building organisational strength on the ground- in the villages, slums, hills and forests of India. And if the RSS has produced a million man march of its own today let us aim for a 10 million man (and woman) march tomorrow !
