It's not the root, that's how. I know it's manzanita because I cut it myself in California ;-)
Most manzanita lumber is quite small, but the bits I got were from some land that had just been cleared in Calistoga and came from some rather large manzanita trees (some of them probably around 25 feet tall). The logs started out about 9 inches (23 cm for our metric friends) in diameter. By the time I took a bandsaw to them and cut through the center of the growth rings and did some other shaping to get pieces that could be safely waxed and dried, the longest pieces were about a foot long long and 3 x 3". Most were shorter because manzanita does not tend to grow in a straight line. I've posted a photo of manzanita in the files section so you can see what I got. These pieces are from 8 to 9 inches long and are next to my Hungarian bagpipe to illustrate the size of the pieces. The fellow who made that bagpipe wants to try to make one using manzanita but I can't seem to locate my longer pieces and the ones I have found are too short to use for a bagpipe chanter. So I'm trying to find a source for more wood like what I cut in the hopes of finding some long pieces. Unfortunately all the manzanita I can find online is either root (beautiful, but too short and irregular for this use) or logs that are left whole for decorative, aquarium, or bird cage use. Because manzanita checks readily unless properly treated within a very short time of being cut, any logs left whole will be useless. I no longer have acess to the land where I used to be able to cut manzanita (or at least I won't within a few weeks and I can't go to California before my window of opportunity closes - long story), so I'm going to need to find an alternative supply if I want any more large pieces. -Arle --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "hurdygurdy" group.
