I remember seeing a lot of this growing, when I went
hiking out west. Maybe you just have to find some
westerner to send you a branch, rather than buying
some through usual wood-buying channels. Maybe a
landscaper is pruning a bush right now and could save
some wood for you if you asked.
An acquaintance of mine made some instrument out of
some bush in his yard, maybe holly.
Would anyone like some barberry branches? There's a
big barberry bush blocking the view out of one of our
windows. The wood is freakishly bright yellow. I think
they use it for dye. I don't know what other
properties it has. I don't know if the pieces would be
big enough for instruments, but they might make
interesting inlay or something.
