Hello,

as far a I know in places like Venice, Florence, Milano, Genua and
Barcelona there was a flourishing cotton processing industry from
12/13th century onwards that also exported to areas like Germany,
Bohemia or Hungary. In the 14th century cotton manufacturing also took
place in in Regensburg, Ulm, Augsburg or Zürich.

I think hurdy gurdies were expensive posh instruments back then: using
very small amounts of (possibly) expensive fibers might not have been
a problem.

By the way I successfuly used horse hair knotted around the string
with half hitches.

kind regards

S.
