Hello, as far a I know in places like Venice, Florence, Milano, Genua and Barcelona there was a flourishing cotton processing industry from 12/13th century onwards that also exported to areas like Germany, Bohemia or Hungary. In the 14th century cotton manufacturing also took place in in Regensburg, Ulm, Augsburg or Zürich.
I think hurdy gurdies were expensive posh instruments back then: using very small amounts of (possibly) expensive fibers might not have been a problem.
