Here's my email and his reply (as posted on the UK Yahoo list).
So, what are you all doing pretending to be players then :-)

I emailed him as well.
Apparently, there are no HG players West of the UK :).
I have set him right on that score.
Here's my email followed by his reply.

Just a quick question.
I note that you say nobody would know how to play this instrument today.
Is this because of the condition or some other aspect of the construction?
I'm sure you are aware that there are many thousands of hurdy gurdy
players around - including me who DO know how to play(and dozens of makers
doing a nice business).
I realize it will take a lot of restoration ( and a lot of money as well)
but what makes you say that Paypal won't cover purchases outside the US?
I'm in the UK and often use Paypal for purchases from the States. What
exactly is the problem?
As you say, a nice historical instrument but in need of a lot of
professional restoration.
Thanks,
Colin Hill
The reply.
Hi Colin,
The probable with Paypal is Ebay forces sellers to offer it, they charge about
8 times what a Bank Wire would cost for one. The other reason is Ebay will not
let sellers pick and choose countries to disable bidding on. There are a lot of
chargeback scams in Europe where buyers receive the item then reverse the
payment and there is nothing a seller can do about it. I have had this happened
to the tune of over $10,000 US in Italy and the Netherlands, and one in France.
I may relist it available to Just the UK.
I have some additional things to include, mainly the Wheel seems to run true
and the bearings should be ok.
My comment about playing pertains to the US, I have never seen one here and
never heard of anyone that plays them.
Best Regards,
Jim

Not exactly, Melissa. Here are his words:
"I mean you don't know how to play it. The people that played those died 100
years ago. I don't think that skill was passed on to this generation, at leat
I've never seen an early one in use. "

The seller never says that no one today plays hg, he just says that
no one today could play THIS hg, which is quite true.

Judith brought this one to our attention:
(200326371252)
It's a sadly abused little Thouvenel, perfect for a very very long
weekend
project.
The best part is not the outrageous price ($2500) but the fact that
the seller
thinks that everyone who played the hurdy-gurdy died out a century
ago.
People have the oddest notions...
