It depends somewhat on the kind of rosin and your taste in how strong you like
the rosin. As with most things with the hurdy-gurdy, experimentation is the
key (so to speak).

Ethyl alcohol = ethanol, the stuff that some of us drink for pleasure.

Where to get 190 proof will vary from state to state. Everclear is a brand of
190 proof alcohol. Some states sell it over the counter. Some require a
permit. Some don't sell it at all.

The stuff at the hardware store is also ethanol, but it's been denatured, i.e.
made undrinkable by adding something toxic. The question is what. Most
companies that make denatured alcohol will use whatever is cheapest at the
time, so it could be methanol (methyl alcohol, which causes blindness), or
toluene (which is pretty toxic), or some other witches brew of organic
solvents. You don't know from batch to batch what will be the denaturing
agent. We stay away from it for that reason.

Even the best vodka is only 80 proof or 100 proof, so 40-50% alcohol and
50-60% water. This is much too much water to use something you'll be putting
on your wheel, so don't use it.
