Wow, I have only seen one alto in my life, and never heard of anyone who  
could make the transition from treble/bass to alto. For one thing, that's a 
lot  of instruments to tune, and then there's the Bb string. The sad 
difference  between viol and hurdy-gurdy is that people will flock to hear the 
H-G, 
but not  the viol. :(
