Ciao Chiara!

That instrument is indeed from the Piemonte region of Italy. As I understand
things though, it's really an Alpine type, since identical instruments were
found in Austrian Tyrol and other areas on the Austrian side of the border. It
appears that it was transported by migrant workers to Hungary in the early
1800s, certainly by the 1840s, and was established in two areas, the Hungarian
Lowlands and Csepel Island, to the south of Budapest. The Csepel tradition died
out completely with no sound recordings by about 1910. The Lowlands one
survived (albeit in a very tenuous state) until the revival picked up in the
1960s and 70s. As far as I know, this type of instrument had died out
completely in Austria and Italy, probably by the late 1800s. (Simon Wascher may
know more about the instrument in Austria, so if I'm wrong, I'd very much
appreciate his clarification.)

Hope that helps.
