I don't know why. Hope it goes away.

I'm going to come off looking like a microphone snob here. Your
mileage may
vary.

The Shure PG-58 is primarily designed as a vocal mic. As such it has
some
resonance peaks in the area where a hurdy-gurdy player would typically
not
want them.

As noted by others, I have a preference for mid or large diaphragm
condenser
microphones. They typically have a flatter response, faster transient
response, and are substantially more efficient: their output output is
typically about 10 times larger than their moving-coil counterparts.
Depending on their design, they are less noisy.

Also as noted, they do require phantom power. All pro studio consoles
and
almost all live consoles these days have phantom power available, so
this is
rarely an issue. For those rare times that you don't have phantom
power
available, keep your PG-58 as a backup.

Condenser mics used to be available only to professionals, but the
trade
imbalance with Asia has changed that equation, so that a lot of
condensers are
available for not too much money.

Before I start making recommendations, can I inquire about your
intended budget?

(For those with a really large budget, I highly recommend a pair of
Royer R122
ribbon mics set up as a Blumlein pair. Yummy!)
