Sam,

On to my question: I will have my first hurdy gurdy lesson next week,
and I'm wondering what to expect!

My own experience is that the HG really isn't like any other instrument, so don't expect too much, too soon. I've never progressed as slowly in learning an instrument as with the HG. Also, I know of no instrument that needs so much routine maintenance. The fact that you have a teacher is a very, very good thing. Mysterious rituals like cottoning, string-shimming, tangent and bridge tuning and wheel care are an indispensable part of the playing the instrument, but very difficult to learn without someone to show you the way. Try not to get frustrated at how much there is to learn all at once. With patience, it will all come together in time.
