I have a three chanter instrument and after reading Simon's tuning
description a few days ago I have decided I want to try the following
chanter tuning:

G (below middle C)
g (above middle c)
d' (one octave above middle C)

I currently have the first two strings (my current tuning is G g g,
all in gut), so I really only need to change one string.

So the first question I have is for any recommendations for what might
be good as that high D. I'd like a relatively inexpensive string to
try this tuning out on before I invest too much in the tuning.

Arle, I'm assuming you mean d", a 9th above Middle C? 587.33 Hz, in an equal temperament scale based on A=440? That would equate with the first chantrelle in the D/G tuning, and the traditional gauge is 0.71mm. I'm not particularly comfortable with that, personally, as if you assume a 38cm scale, you'll have a tension of pretty close to 10 Kg, which is asking a lot of a gut string. On my instrument that one string requires more attention than all the others combined, and breaks more often, too. I assume the old boys stressed that string so heavily to get an "edge" to the sound to compete with bagpipes in a dance band, but I've experimented a little with smaller-gauge strings and am giving serious thought to trying strings with a diameter of 0.060 mm, which would reduce the tension to a more practicable 7.5 Kg or so. Neil Brook has apparently been experimenting with solutions to this problem too, and advertises the "Wonder String" on his web site. I should have one in my hands within a few days. Others may have tried it, and could speak to its characteristics.
