Seems to be a Rousseau temperament.

I have decided to accept his arcane nature, as I never get to play with others,
anyway, and tune him as he was meant to be. Along with the Bassot (died 1808)
signature and a brother hg in the hands of the French ministry of culture, this
tuning confirms the age for me. Googling tells me Rousseau was extant to about
1810. I don't care that my Bassot has divisions in his C-bouts, so does the one
below.

... and the one in Boston does, too. That's the way Joseph Bassot, fils, did
it, along with carving the heads himself rather than jobbing them out to good
sculptors ;^). I like them, gives them whimsy.

Happy cranking!

Hi, all,

I've recently gotten an iPod Touch (2nd g) as a very early birthday present
from my beloved. Browsing through Apps for the first time, I found the
Cleartune tuner ($3.99) ( http://www.bitcount.com/cleartune/temperaments.html
), for which I had to go out and find a microphone that would work with the
iPod. If I had an iPhone, I wouldn't have needed that bit. Anyway, I bought the
app for the different temperament settings available, more than I knew existed,
as I have been fussing much too much with my little old Bassot and modern equal
temperament and I've wanted to know what his natural tuning is. Well, there are
23 temperaments included in the tuner. At the bottom of the list are six French
tunings (Early French, Homogeneous French - 1/5 SC, Rameau, Rousseau II,
Rousseau III, Rouseau IV). Guess what? M. Bassot, with his tangents
perpendicular to one chanterelle comes very close to each of these six, even
the Bs are close. When I've spent a wee bit more
time, I might nail down the magic one. I've only spent a few minutes trying
this out and I thought I'd ask an opinion of the learned before committing
tangent surgery, again.

Do any of you tune to one of these temperaments? How well do you fit in with
other musical instruments?

All the Best,
Barbara
