Hi, A young lady turned up at my workshop early last month with a sad looking H/G wrapped in a blanket inside a black plastic rubbish bin liner. "Hi, I was told your are the guy that deals with Hurdy gurdies in Finland "-------------------------------- Ok------, fast forward, She had received the instrument from a Swedish theatre producer who had rescued it from a house fire(smoke damage), who told her that if she could get it fixed and learn to play it she could keep it and play it in a Summer musical she was performing near Turku. We chatted, she was prepared to spend some money to get it fixed. 64$ ?------------------------- Well------------leave it with me and I call you, when I have some idea as to the extent of work needed to FIX it. List---------- New set of strings. Strap. Soft backpack case One new tuning peg. New wheel cover. Wedge for trompette. Glue and clamp crack to back/side joint . Check and trim wheel (solid one piece). Clean, remove soot and grim from inside and out, polish. Re string /tune and set up and play. I called and told her the cost---------------------------------- wait--------------------------. Work began-------------------------. Some days later the young lady returned to hear and get her FIRST idea as to what she had invested her money in. I gave her the beginner's basic instructions and advise and encouragement,(as best as one can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). She was frilled and excited and could not wait to get started. She produced the cash 380€ as agreed and left------------------------------ I was pleased to have helped another person join our small crazy family and bring back to life a piece of History.
This is where I need some help from you Guys and Girls. I assumed that the H/G that came from Sweden was built in Sweden. I sent photo`s to Leif Eriksson, this was his reply" Hello, I´m sorry I can´t help you. I don´t know anyone in sweden who could have buildt that hurdy. /leif Fast forward----------- I was at Kaustinen Folk Festival last week and I meet a man who had this word "WITERTHUR" printed on the back of his T-shirt.I remember that word from inside the above H/G and asked where he came from and where was this place ,Switzerland. Can someone fill in the details ????????????? Billy Horne -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "hurdygurdy" group.
