Matthias Loibner plays the hurdy-gurdy in an unheard-of way. He treats his
instrument at times tenderly, at times relentlessly, and oscillates between
nearly forgotten and newly found sounds – from ancient music to experimental
dance floor – in solo concerts as well as in duets with actress and singer
Natasa Mirkovic-De Ro. Born in Bosnia-Herzegovina, singer Natasa Mirkovic-De Ro
has performed opera, jazz and rock as well as traditional and gypsy song before
fleeing war-torn Sarajevo and settling in Austria where she met hurdy-gurdy
maestro Matthias Loibner whilst singing with the celebrated Sandy Lopicic
Orkestar. With intense, expressive feeling she joins her exquisite vocals to
the exotic yet strangely familiar sounds of the ancient hurdy-gurdy.
Mirkovic-De Ro also played the role of Kassandra in her solo theater/lied
project “Kassandra - Laments Of the Balkans.”

The duo's project Ajvar & Sterz, featuring music from Austria and the Balkans,
won the Austrian World-Music Award in 2005. In November 2010, they released
F.Schubert/W.Müllers Winterreise on Raumklang Records.

Winterreise is a cycle of 24 poems, best known as the song cycle for voice and
piano by Franz Schubert (published as Op. 89 in 1827). In the poems, written by
Wilhelm Müller, a young man, disappointed in love, wanders through a bleak
winter landscape. Trading the piano for a hurdy-gurdy, Mirkovic-De Ro and
Loibner give you a Winterreise unlike any you have ever experienced!
