Hello, I do have the Lemm DVD and did a review for Folker mag when it came out. For me it is quite useful for a newbie as a starting point to learn some basic techniques. You also get some information on the maintenance of the instrument and an interview with Kurt Reichmann. It is a question of personal taste if you like Lemm's performance in "historical" costume, but at least it fits the musical material she offers.
My main point of critic was that in some tracks the hurdy-gurdy Ms. Lemm uses sounds out of tune and not really good maintained. Not a good business card and for a DVD sold "professionally" this lapsus is in MY opinion not really acceptable. Unfortunately this out-of-tune-sound is used for a kind of introduction plates indicating the beginning of a new section and therefore this "untuned" sound occures quite often. This kind of indicates that a hurdy-gurdy may sound out of tune and this is not a good example to people who start learning the instrument. In contradiction, Ms Lemm does know how to get a gurdy in good tune as the DVD part on tuning shows. The DVD has hints how to hold the instrument, how to tune the strings, how to cotton, aplly colophane and set up the trumpet string. Md. Lemm gives a summary of the HG history (Interview with Kurt Reichmann). Chater 3 is dedicated to the left hand techniques and fingerings. Chapter 4 is about the trumpet sting techniques, on coup de 1, regular coup de 2, coup de 3 and 4. The learning steps are in good chosen parts and are well explained. The melodies chosen are easy but not unambitious. Many have second voices and are shown played by Ms. Lemm and another hurdy-gurdy player. The bonus section has a hurdy-gurdy first aid, a list of no-gos etcv. All music taught on the DVD is included in printable PDF file format. You can check a sample of the DVD here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tadDp0BqC8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cozxZRvksM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKeHFEvzdwc Another nice feature one can find on Lemm's website quite some musical notes as MIDI and PDF files: http://www.drehleier-musik.de/archive.php I do wonder why none of the big shots has done a tutorial DVD as far as I know. There are some very good teachers among them like Isabelle Pignol or Gilles Chabenat, and I would love to see a tutorial DVD by one of them, but I guess the financial risk of producing one is too big. Or not? On the other hand videos can be produced nowadays for a reasonable price. I wish you a Good and Happy New Hurdy-Gurdy Year 2012. Take care.
