David -

I am selling a Helmut Gotschy Phoenix in D/G for a friend (it was
originally my first instrument before my friend bought it, now she's got a
fancier
instrument and is selling the Phoenix). The link here provides a demo video
that describes it better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI-iGwLa8Bo.
She's asking $1900 US. You'd need to add the cost of shipping from California
to
Australia, which is probably another couple of hundred dollars US. My
friend's Phoenix would definitely be one option for you. Email me off list if
you want to discuss.

Good used gurdies at a decent price are rare; however if you're willing to
wait to have a new one built, there are luthiers on this list who make
suitable beginner-intermediate models. For a new model in this class, I
suggest Neil Brook, Mel Dories (gurdycrafters), and Olympic (if they're still
making the Chinook or Orca).

Hello everybody David is my name, I have just recently discovered this
instrument thanks to a motorcycle forum and was referred to this group by
Matthew Szostak who makes some beautiful instruments.I play a few string
things
mandolin mostly and have a dodgy band here in melb. Australia but in all
my years playing and working as a performance oriented audio engineer I have
never before seen this delightful thing called a hurdy gurdy. I can only
presume that they are as rare as hens teeth on this continent and therein
lies the problem I seek to resolve . Would any of you good people be able to
steer me in the right direction. Ideally I would like find one so i could
learn to play it ,in australia if possible. Thank you all, Best Regards,
David Job.
