Hi, Belinda,

Hurdy-gurdies are a bit tricky to mic - but you knew that. ;-)

There are a couple of microphones and mic combinations that I like for HG.
With both of these, farther out is better: three or four feet out, at
about four feet or five feet up, with absorbent screens behind the player
and behind the mic - you want some liveliness from the space, but not too
much.

My very favorite mics for hurdy-gurdy are a pair of Royer R-122's, set up
as a Blumlein pair. This is an old stereo micing technique, developed by
Alan Blumlein. These are ribbon microphones, which give a very clean,
crisp and rich sound.

Another option is a large diaphragm condenser mic, such as an AKG 414, a
Neumann TLM103, or a Rode NT2. With whatever mic it is, set it to cardioid
pattern if it's switchable. Position as described above, in front and to
the tail end of the player. If you are the player, the mic should be at
about 1:00 o'clock to your position.

Hope this helps,

Alden
