Steven, I've never seen any place that rents them. I think your best bet would be to find one of the festivals that pop up from time to time and travel to it. Often the organizers of such festivals, if they know in advance, can arrange to have learner instruments brought in. As you note the investment is very high, but HG players in my experience tend to be willing to help out quite a bit.
