I should have said that the HG is thought to be a street instrument, which is 
hardly surprising since this is its only public function.  It will never again 
be an instrument of musical expression because the playing of this repertoire 
requires musical literacy, study and hard work. 
In the 1960'S and 80',s when we were doing our own field work and becoming 
ethnomusicologists as well as promoting educational concerts, I thought to ask 
for funding, Swedish style.  But I was told by the Early Music Forum, 'We do 
not fund folk music.' Ignorance abounds.  Truly, as my Scottish neighbour says, 
We are a benighted and class-ridden society.
