well, i can say a bit about that change of timbre, i think. i owned a DSS-1
Digital Sampling piece of Shit) for a while and it was all about sampling
real instruments till you have like the most mellow sounding oboe or the
nicest brass sounds. Now, in its tutorial, it was telling how the
sounds(which sucked) that the factory gave you were sampled. the way it
works is they play a note on each octave(usually an A note cause the harmonic
and frequencies are even numbers and thats easier[take their word for it :])
and they then transpose that sample up in pitch till the next note they
sampled and do it again... so sometimes, like the example you found, the
difference in timbre is very apparent between the small space of an octave
i apply this to the rm1x because it is pcm and what is pcm? Pretty Crappy
and not Mine :) so our rm1xs are basically samplers whose ram cannot be
cleared or overwritten we are at the mercy of the types of people who make
those great gabba and ethnic presets to get our sounds...... right
