As part of the redesign and new upgrades of the TekLab server (in
preparation for our new web site, which will make its way online in a few
days...) I've switched over list processor software being used. None of
the TekLab lists were in operation today while this changeover occurred -
again, I apologize if you've sent mail and it hasn't gone through. You
will need to re-send it.
Quite a few problems have been solved with this switchover (from
sendmail->qmail, and majordomo->ezmlm, for those interested in these
things) - no longer do subscribe/unsubscribe requests need to be in a
special message format in order to be automatically processed by the list
processor. Its far easier for new Internet users to become members of the
various forums now.
To subscribe to a list in the future, send mail to
<list-name>[EMAIL PROTECTED]
e.g. To subscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED], you'd send
mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To unsubscribe from a TekLab list, send mail to
<list-name>[EMAIL PROTECTED]
e.g. To unsubscribe from tekdev-list, you'd send mail
to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Both processes require a confirmation step - details for which you will
receive automatically once you've sent your mail off to the TekLab server.
To get help from the list processor, send mail to <list-name>[EMAIL PROTECTED]
e.g. To find out how to retrieve archives for [EMAIL PROTECTED],
send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This new list processor cuts down on a *lot* of work that I was having to
do behind the scenes to keep people happy with subscribing/unsubscribing,
and it also makes it a lot easier for me to do things like integrate with
web pages for subscribing/unsubscribing. Not to mention that people are
more able to control their subscriptions/unsubscriptions themselves, and
that the new list processor takes care of *bounced emails/invalid
addresses* far better than the old one (Majordomo) was capable of...
Also, the new list processor keeps an archive - so if you want archives
sent to you, it is now possible - just get the help message sent to you (as
indicated above) to find out how to get archives.
And finally - the new mail system allows us to do better integration with
the online web forums, which we will be working on in the coming weeks as
part of our arrangement with various companies to provide support services
on the web *as well as* through e-mail.
Please keep an eye on things for me over the next week or so, as things
settle down. If you notice something - send me an email about it! Even if
its just to say "things seem smoother now", or "something is broken", I'd
really like to hear how things go on the other side of all this work.
(BTW - sorry for those of you who are getting sick of my test
messages. Things have settled now, installation-wise - so hopefully there
won't be any more test messages tonight.)
