Working in the support industry in both Unix and Windows, I have to agree.
Internal modems are slower (generally because of the amount of your PC
resources they use), more unreliable, and in my view should be avoided.
This is not to say they don't work. Some people have no problem with them.
Quite a few do though. They're a bit like the newer laser printers that
have come down in price. They are cheaper but because the rely on your
motherboard to operate they are less reliable.
