my only advice is to write really good arrangements for your project if you
need to mix together eletronica stuff (samplings, FX, synths, etc.) and real
instruments. Coming from a playing background (Stick and bass), I've had big
difficulties to mantain that modern electronic feel playing with real
musicians (included me). Often guitar players tend to overplay and drummers
have very personal timing interpretation (...). Not to talk about bassists... ;)
the overall sound can be easily screwed, losing that modern electronic style
you're trying to achieve.
Today I think less is better. be aware to acustic drum sounds too: they can
make huge difference in the mix. and if your drummer style doesn't fit well
the genre that can be a big problem. have you ever listen to a rock drummer
doing his bad d&b imitation? :(
