I used to mess around with a human drummer a while back, and what we did to
keep the drummer in perfect tempo was to use an old, cheap drum machine (a
Yamaha RX21L in this case,) as a metronome. I slaved the RX21L to my
sequencer's master clock, and then the drummer programmed a simple pattern
with a clear beat into the drum machine. He then wore a pair of loud
headphones hooked up to the RX21L. With this setup, he was able to stay
with the MIDI clock, even when my electronic gear wasn't playing anything.
