Yamaha doesn't do a good job (IMO) of explaining the architecture of the
RM1x.

I made a graphic (ah, sweet procrastination) that shows my understanding
of how things work in pattern mode:

A phrase is the basic musical unit. A phrase consists of actual MIDI
data plus a default voice. You get 256 phrases per style.

A style (aka pattern) is a group of 16 sections, plus stuff in the setup
menus (MIDI output channels + knob assignments).

A section is a group of 16 tracks. Each track can have a phrase
assigned to it. You can use the default phrase voice, or a different
voice (with different voice edits and effects). More than one track can
use the same phrase, so you can have the same note pattern but with
different voices.

You can forget that the word "patch" is used. A patch is really just
the part of the section that is the mapping of tracks to phrases. (You
can see the track to phrase mapping by hitting "Pattern" once or twice.)

I think that's right. I feel better now that I've gotten that out of my
head. Please correct any mistakes.

        - Mike.
