I tend to agree with all that's been said regarding presets. I've
already made a few tunes with my new rm1x using presets that have been
re-tuned, and the bpm altered to my liking. I then use some drum loops with
my sampler, have added some vox and guitar (yeah, perhaps an antiquated
instrument to some on the list), and I can almost guarantee that a tune's
been made that is original and not a "cookie cutter" song. Has
anyone read on the working habits of Moby? I've noticed in a couple of his
interviews that he's not one to fiddle too much with presets, and just goes
for what he likes in each of his machines (God knows he's got a crapload of
keyboards and samplers).
I think what it boils down to for me is *time.* I wish I had more of the
stuff, but this is the real world, with real responsibilities, and I can't
be locked up in my studio for months trying to make that "definitive sound,"
as I'm not a full-time musician with a recording contract (sigh). I'm sure
if we all had more time, we'd be trying to make the wierdest, most
undefined, mutated sounds possible (i try to do it regardless). I think the
key is to do your own thing, find your own method to your music madness, and
just keep at it. That's my lecture for today - peace.
