if you already have a PC you can easily find cubasis for free (usually it's
bundled with audio cards...). it gives you MIDI + 8 audio tracks.
if you need just MIDI and rock stability, I suggest an Atari 1040st with
Cubase 2.0... great MIDI timing, almost laptop dimensions and you can find
them really cheap these days...
