Thank you very much for the screenshot, it really clarified things a bit.
I've finally managed to get the maintenance screen (I read the info in
the synce page, it's quite useful). The main issue was that I was just
not pushing the correct buttons!! The version is 1.01, not 1.10
(that's what appears on a normal boot). I also managed to get the USB
prompt with minicom.
Just one more question: I really don't get what's the difference
between the installation method described in
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HpIpaqHx4700HowtoInstallLinux
and using other utilities like BootBlaster. Or is it simply that
BootBlaster doesn't work with the 4700?
Thank you all for your responses,
Luis P.

Hi all,
I'm trying to install Familiar in a hx4700, following the howto at
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HpIpaqHx4700HowtoInstallLinux
but I'm encountering problems from the very beginning.
The tutorial says:
"Enter the HP Maintenance screen by holding Addressbook and iTask,
then pushing the reset button at the bottom of the device. The
screen you arrive to should say "v1.01" and have an "hp" logo.
However, the screen is not backlit, so it may be difficult to see. "
---> In fact, mine says '1.10' and the screen IS backlit. Is it a
problem?
"Sit the device in the USB cradle and plug the USB cable into a
computer system's USB port. At this point, a "USB" should appear at
the top of the screen of the iPAQ device, replacing "SERIAL". On the
computer system (or at least *nix derivatives), there should also
now appear a device at /dev/ttyUSB0"
---> When I do that, I don't see any "USB" or "SERIAL" in the
screen. But a /dev/ttyUSB0 appears. Any further attempts to
communicate with minicom have failed. (it only says
CLIENTCLIENTCLIENTCLIENT and nothing appears as I type)
I'm pretty new to all this stuff, so forgive me if any of this
questions are too obvious...is
Thanks in advance,
Luis P.

The screen should look quite similar to

(Sorry about the poor quality, I had to scan the display.)

(Sorry, forgot to actually send it to the mailing list ;) )
BootBlaster doesn't work with the hx4700, and I wouldn't advise trying it.
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HpIpaqHx4700HowtoInstallLinux
worked for me with the latest Familiar (v0.8.4-rc2.3) on my hx4700
flawlessly (use GPE, Opie pixel-doubles horribly), I used a VMWare
Ubuntu install for any Linux related needs, then I used a Linux machine
I acquired later to do USB Networking - I couldn't get the Windows XP
USB networking instructions to work at all.
