Hi all
With Hydrogen 0.9.6 RC available it's high time to update the manual
New features must be added and some existing parts need updating
(all help is welcome !)
Since the manual is not complete (and this might take some time to get it
done) this got me thinking about a couple of things :
1) Would it be possible to separate the Hydrogen app and manual AND create
a mechanism that informs the user that an updated manual is available
(+offer the option to auto-download it)
The benefits:
- undocumented features can be added after Hydrogen has been released
- the same goes for missing translations
- an unfinished manual doesnt delay the release of the app
- error corrections can be done whenever needed
To do this we would need a central 'repository' + a mechanism that checks
for a more recent manual version (check on startup or something like that)
Note that we DONT want a 0.9.6 version to download a manual for 0.9.7 since
this would make no sense
Note that the manual that is available at the time of release would still
be packed with the app so the users DO have a manual available when they
first install Hydrogen
Maybe we can generate a pdf and let Hydrogen simply launch an external PDF
reader when the user wants to open the manual ?
2) online manual <> forum
The manual that is currently available online is a snapshot of the manual
so it should also be updated when changes are made.
However ... the online manual is a 'manual copy' of the actual manual that
cannot be updated automatically
Also there are some differences between the 0.9.5 and the 0.9.6 (mainly
GUI) so we cannot replace the current version with a new one since 0.9.5
users would be lost
Also there are a lot of links in forum post that point to the current
(online) manual. These links must be preserved !!
So i guess we will have to leave the current online manual as is and add a
manual for the 0.9.6
Ideas ?
Grtz
Thijs
BTW : did i mention that all help is welcome ? ;-)
