I have tried now with 9.0.1 and I get the same error as you.

If you don't customize hyrolo-file-list yourself, but keep the default nil
value, hyrolo will use "~/.rolo.otl", or if it exists "~/.rolo.org", as your
hyrolo file.

If you want to add to the list of files you need to customize
hyrolo-file-list. You should then typically make the list of files start with
"~/.rolo.otl" or "~/.rolo.org".

I can understand why you expected Hyperbole to set the hyrolo-file-list after
the fact that it has created the first rolo file. Things can possibly be made
clearer. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
