It appears that the gettext function applied an extraneous ISO-8859-1
-> UTF-8 conversion. Would you mind checking that the header entry of
your .po file (i.e. the "translation" of the empty string) contains
the line
"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8\n"
and not
"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1\n"
