Hi,

The current XFree86 release (4.3.0) offers support for the input of
Vietnamese characters in UTF-8 locales using the Compose mechanism:

Compose ' or dead_acute => acute accent (ascending tone)
Compose ` or dead_grave => grave accent (descending tone)
Compose ^ or dead_circumflex => circumflex accent
Compose ! or dead_dotbelow => dot below
Compose ? or dead_hook => hook above
Compose + or dead_horn => horn

Vietnamese speakers pointed out to me that this is unwieldy due to the
massive usage of accents in Vietnamese and to the common usage of input
methods (for MS Windows) mapping

oo => o with circumflex
aa => a with circumflex
es => a with acute accent
etc...

Do some similar input methods exist for Unix? Is somebody working on this?

The Compose mechanism looks ok to input short sentences or proper
citations of Vietnamese names, but not for the input of a large body of
text, where such an input method would be needed.
