Sounds good!

What's the value you set while you are testing?

Did you modify all XI18N_OBJS for locales you use?
Also did you install Compose file onto all locales you use?
For example, If you use en_US.UTF-8 locale, both
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/XI18N_OBJS
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose
should be replaced.
If you use ja_JP.UTF-8 locale, both
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/ja_JP.UTF-8/XI18N_OBJS
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/ja_JP.UTF-8/Compose
should be repalced.
Did you see the IM status displaying [ English/European ]?
In the sample Compose file on openi18n.org defines <Multi_key>
as compose key. <Multi_key> is the key produces XK_Multi_Key
keysym. Does your compose key produces XK_Multi_key keysym?
For the keyboard which does not have compose key, the sample
Compose file also defines Ctrl<T> as an alternative, so you may
want to give a try with Ctrl<T> (control-shift-t pressed
simultaneously).
BTW, do you have any other XIM server running?
If you have kinput2 running, you need to stop it
to isolate the symptoms you encountered.
Other thing to check:
- Does IIIMF server (htt_server) running as a daemon launched from rc?
- XMODIFIERS to be @im=local
Best Regards,
