Hi Ivan,
many thanks for your reply ...

Let me then say something more about what I would like to get ...

I need to work on different machines ...
These machines (usually) run different Linux versions ...
That means ... I would need to get a solution that works not only with
the newest XFree86, but also with ... XFree86 3.3.6, for example ...
Moreover, these machines have different keyboards (layouts) ... sometimes
"us", sometimes "de", sometimes "it", sometimes "fr", sometimes "pl" ...
Thus ... what I would need is a solutions which allows me to "merge" my
own definitions with these that are defined by default on a particular
machine (when the Xserver starts it loads proper defaults, of course) ...
Moreover, it would be nice if ... the solution was also working with
standalone XTerminals ...

>From what you say ... I can forget KeySyms above 4 ... as the
XLookupString does not allow to access them ...

The XLOCALEDIR is also a problem ... I would need to "replace" the whole
set of locales
... would it work with XFree86 3.3.6 at all ?
... it should, however, work with standalone XTerminals, shouldn't it ?
(Yes, I have read an email that in the 4.4.0 there will be the possibility
to have .XCompose and/or $XCOMPOSEFILE ... but ... I cannot rely on it as
most of systems will NOT have 4.4.x installed in foreseeable future ...)

What remains then is the XKB ...
I must say that I looked at it ... and it seems to be really complicated
... does it also work with XFree86 3.3.x ?
... I can forget standalone XTerminals, can't I ?
To me, it seems that (as in the case of XLOCALEDIR) I would need to define
my own whole set of keyboards ... again ... I could not find any simple
solution to "merge" my own set of definitions with these that were
"loaded" when the Xserver was started ...

What now ?

Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Jacek.
