To be clear what I meant, consider:

local config:      ephemeral:
A                  A/B - B is introduced as an augmentation of A

If A is deleted, the question is whether we had B as an orphan or not.

Thus, it "carries through" in the sense that the merge results in
inconsistent state rather than B being deleted as well.
