But unfortunately, I would like to have both: 1pixel mode and a good focus indication. The "I don't waste any space" function of i3 is one of my favourites. I think this may be possible only by somehow changing the colours of the other windows (like rxvt can do it) or by some marching ants. I have to admit that I have no idea if/how this can be done in i3 or if it is even in the scope of i3. Perhaps it is possible to write a program that shades other programs colours. Sounds a bit like compositing...
