I’d recommend reading http://code.stapelberg.de/git/i3/tree/src/config.c?h=next#n111 which explains much better than I ever could how it works. Note that X11 thinks in keycodes, not in keysyms. I.e., what you get in xev is only what libX11 makes of the keycodes it gets. Sorry for not being very helpful here.
