In this wonderful world that we live in there are carbs and there are carbs. Just like there are kings and there are kings. But not all carbs are made equal and there are reasons why some carbs can make you gain weight. To function as a healthy human being you need carbs in conjunction with fats and proteins. The ratio should be like this: Protein 30%, fats 10%, carbs 60%. Each type of food element has its uses. Protein is for muscle growth and repair. Carbs are for energy and immune function and fat is for brain and nervous system development. Now this article is about carbs so lets talk about carbs and the reason why some carbs can make you gain weight.. First of all there are two types of carbs. Simple carbs and complex carbs. 1. Simple Carbs: Simple carbohydrates are usually termed to be "bad" carbs, but these are those that have been refined and broken down before being put back together again in an unnatural way such as to produce a sweet product like chocolate. Other examples of simple sugars are white bread, potatoes, pasta, flour, cakes, table sugar, toffee, boiled sweets, liquorice, fudge, soft drinks, honey, tinned fruits, plain biscuits etc. These foods are high in sugar and calories. When eaten they raise your blood sugar very quickly but send it crashing down just as quick. This up and down movement causes you to get tired and hungry quickly thus making you eat more in a short space of time. Do you think this is the reason why some carbs can make you gain weight. 2. Complex carbs: Complex carbs are foods .Essentially those in wholegrain form such as wholegrain breads, oats, muesli and brown rice. Complex carbs are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple carbohydrates and thus furnish a gradual steady stream of energy throughout the day. Other examples of complex carbs are various types of vegetables like broccoli, spinach, greens, carrots etc. Are you begining to see the reason why some carbs can make you gain weight? These types of carbs are slow releasing carbs. What i mean by that is they raise your blood sugar slowly and keep it elevated for longer than simple sugars do. This will keep you satisfied, food wise for longer and also keep your energy levels up for much longer which will make you active in the long run, which will produce long term weight loss. So, can see the reason why some carbs make can make you gain weight. Plain and simple, some carbs can make you fat and those carbs are called simple carbs. Eat less of them and you will lose weight.
