When times are good we have a tendency to not concern ourselves with the little
things, the little habits or tasks that will save a little money here and a
little money there but as times get tougher we begin to consider our actions
and alternatives to our way of doing things.

The same can be said for conserving energy as well, when times are good we
seldom concern ourselves with making an effort to reduce our energy
consumption. For most of us our energy costs constitute a large part of our
monthly budgets, being able to reduce our energy usage can have a very positive
impact to our family finances.

Energy conservation has come to the forefront of people's minds in the past
couple of years, as the cost of the world's commodity prices continues to
increase. There are many initiatives that have been implemented to save our
environment, and it is having positive results. There are many creative ways
to reduce the energy requirements of our families, what sorts of ideas can you
come up with?

One of the ways you can contribute to energy conservation and save money at the
same time is to become more energy efficient in your home. Here are some
suggestions:

1. When you leave a room, turn off the lights.
2. Unplug appliances when not in use.
3. Do not keep the computer on sleep mode as it expends more energy.
4. Purchase energy-efficient light bulbs for your home. They last for ten
years.
5. Turn off the air conditioner when you go out.
6. Turn down the thermostat during the day and open the blinds. Let the
warmth of the sun heat your rooms.
7. Set the thermostat in the refrigerator to the recommended degree.
8. Use candles whenever possible.
9. Purchase energy-efficient ceiling fans for your home.
10. Turn off the lights when you are watching TV.

These are just some suggestions to help you conserve energy and save money. At
a time when we are all trying to save money during this recession, and because
we do not know how long it will last, anything you can do to reduce the costs
of utility bills will greatly help you further down the road.

Besides saving money, more and more people are seeing conservation of energy as
the "right thing to do" trying to do their part in reducing our impact on the
planet. While these 10 conservation ideas are simple and easy, they will have
a big impact on your energy bill and the planet.
