For most people, this is the one letter they would always be wishing to avoid,
and are often afraid of knowing what "numbers" are included inside - your
monthly electric billing statement.

It's very hard to figure out how to reduce your electric bill when you don't
know the main consumption killers in your household. Most folks are now getting
eco-conscious as they search for alternative and better ways to cut costs,
while still maintain their present standard of living.

A thorough inspection will reveal that, but in most cases they usually fall
into 3 categories.

1. Heating and cooling devices:
The typical household most often than not, uses the biggest portion of its
energy for heating and cooling, and usually takes around 45% of one's utility
bill. Obviously, these are the devices that are basic necessities for most
people. If you want to know how to effectively reduce your electric bill,
without compromising on the "temperature" of your home, try programmable
thermostats. These things can help reduce the energy that is wasted from
heating or cooling a house - particularly when no one is at home or at night
time when everyone's asleep.

According to one energy saving company, programmable thermostats "can save as
much as 20% to 30% on your heating or cooling costs by allowing for multiple
daily settings and automatically adjusting when outside temperature changes."

You can also take advantage of using ceiling fans, in place of air conditioning
units, especially during summer. A number of energy-conscious individuals
prefer this method, noting that "moving air tends to feel cooler, allowing for
higher summertime thermostat setting."

2. Lighting and cooking devices:
Unarguably the next biggest portion of energy the average household spends is
for lighting and appliances. Without even counting the refrigerator, it is
estimated that this category comprises 33% of one's utility bill. Some of the
alternatives that can help reduce your electric bill can either be compact
fluorescent lamps (CFLs), which use up to 3/4 less energy than standard
incandescent bulbs and they tend to last 10 times longer. They are a little bit
priced higher, but if you do your math, it translates to a considerable amount
of savings on your part.

3. Water Heating:
The third and last biggest consumption killer is heating water, which amounts
to around 15% to 20% of one's utility bill. And since I myself hate taking cold
showers, I just couldn't live without this utility. However, I found that you
can reduce your electric bill by considering the use of hot water jackets or
aerating, low-flow faucets and shower heads.

Aside from a knowledge of these top 3 consumption killers, there are also other
ways you can effectively reduce your electric bill by purchasing what is known
as "simple free energy" devices that make use of the natural elements such as
the sun, wind, and magnetism (which is growing in popularity and practical to
use for most households). Be sure to perform careful research with these
companies though before making an informed decision.
