I've had a lot of friends and family ask me about turning my hobby of candle
making into a business. These questions pop up more and more these days with
people losing their jobs and having difficulty finding new ones. The great
thing about working from home is..you're at home! When money is tight any way
to cut costs and bring in some extra revenue is great. The question is how do
you turn a hobby in to a real business. What makes a person a successful
candle manufacturer. There are simple answers to these very common questions.

First and foremost is a well thought out business plan. This is the foundation
to any business, you cannot just dive headfirst into something without having a
plan to guide you. For the majority of people wanting to branch out this is
the most daunting task. There are plenty of available resources out there for
you to use. Research online or find some books to help you, personal
experience is a great lesson so ask anyone you may know that has started their
own business as well.

The next important task involves market research. Market research is
important, if you want to be successful in your candle business you need to
have a hook. If all you do is sell purple lavender scented candles, but your
competitor sells strawberry cheesecake scented candles AND lavender scented
candles AND allows the customer to customize their product who do you think
will get the sales? You need something that will make you stand apart from the
pack. Label your candles in an attractive manner. Be professional, have a
professional website if you're going to sell online. Use quality products and
present yourself in a professional manner. Remember, image is everything.

One of the final, and most important pieces is finances. Money is often the
determinating factor on whether an idea goes ahead or not. If you plan on
setting up a physical shop then you need to be sure you have good credit. You
will need to apply for loans. If you plan on starting an online shop, then
ensuring that you have enough money to start up your website is just as
essential. You'll need good hosting, check out services, payment services, a
lot of good web hosts provide these services with easy to use set ups. You'll
also need to think about advertising your business.

While the process can seem daunting, and time consuming the results are highly
rewarding. Seeing your product out in the world for hundreds to enjoy, and you
enjoying the process of providing that product to your customers! It takes
some serious thought and research before you actually branch out from candle
hobbiest to candle manufacturer. In the end it is a rewarding and very
possible endeavor.
