If you have bought an MP3 player before or if you are buying one for the first
time, the following tips will help you find the best MP3 player for your money
based on what you are looking for.

The first tip is to decide on a budget before you begin looking too seriously.
If you know what you can afford to spend, then a sales representative won't
talk you into buying something ridiculously expensive.

The prices for MP3 players vary. You can find a used iPod for less money than a
new one, or you can find cheaper brands of MP3 players like ScanDisk. On the
other hand, you can spend a small fortune and get the newest, highest-quality
gadget.

What it comes down to is this: Basically, the more the MP3 player can store,
the more it is going to cost you. If you spend money on a brand like the iPod,
you are going to spend more money just because of the recognizable brand.

As for deciding how much storage you will need, just go with the highest
storage space you can afford.

The more expensive MP3 players are going to cost more because of the amount of
storage they have. So, when you are deciding your price range, you are
basically deciding on how much storage your MP3 player is going to have.

There are two different storing methods on MP3 players. The first is a hard
drive and the second is flash memory. A hard drive is built in and usually
allows more room for storage. Flash memory is usually more compact but has less
space so it is typically less money.

If you want a general idea for how much music one MP3 player can hold, look at
the amount of megabytes. Each song is generally about three to four megabytes.
If your machine says it will hold 512 megabytes, then that's about 136 songs.

So, the more megabytes the player has, the more music it is going to hold. One
that has 10 gigabytes will hold close to 3,000 songs. You can save money by
looking at used MP3 players. It's a great idea to look at a newer model but
then wait and buy it after it has been out for a few months or a year.

See if the player can play other types of files besides MP3s such as AAC and
WMA files. An AAC is a new kind of audio file that plays higher-quality sound
than an MP3 file. The WMA file is also similar to the MP3 file but more
advanced.

Finally, when are you going to be listening to music? All the time? At work?
Just in the car? Just while you work out? If you wear your player while you
run, you don't want it to skip or wear out. For working out, a flash player
will last longer.

Also consider whether you want to use rechargeable batters or replaceable
batteries. Rechargeable batteries are obviously going to save you some time and
money in the long run but will cost more up front.

Buying two sets of rechargeable batteries is a good idea because then one can
be charging while the other is in use. It's also nice when you go on longer
trips or will be camping or outdoors for long periods.
