Most people love to travel. Kids love to travel, too. But it's not always fun
or easy to travel with kids from staying in hotels to driving across wide-open
states like North Dakota.

Since now is the time of year when many families are headed out on road trips
with the whole family, here are some tips for road trips and staying in hotels
when you have your young children along:

1. Give each kid a map.

Let them follow along and track where you are driving too. Give them a map of
each state like North Dakota and South Dakota. If you buy the laminated kind,
they can even write on the maps with dry-erase markers.

Encourage your children to draw the route you are going or to help you find the
shortest route. Have them watch for each city you are passing through and play
games like who can find the road signs first or who can find the landmarks
first.

For example, if you are driving through North Dakota, see who can see the first
sign of the badlands or see who can spot the World's Largest Buffalo first.

2. Create as many games as possible.

Playing games like finding every letter of the alphabet or counting all the
hotels or looking for a license plate from every state will help pass time in
the car.

3. Don't stress over the little things.

There will be times when the kids will be crabby and you will be tired. Someone
will probably spill their soda in the car or do some name-calling. Try not to
get too worked up over little incidents that are bound to happen.

When you look back on your trip, the bumps in the road will be the most
memorable!

4. Leave during a time when young kids normally sleep.

That way if you leave during their nap time or at night, they will be more
likely to sleep in the car.

5. Pop in a DVD!

Just because you didn't have that luxury as a kid doesn't mean you shouldn't
benefit from it now. If you don't want to hear The Lion King three times, then
give the kids headphones.
6. Use a nightlight at the hotel.

If your kid is used to sleeping with a nightlight, bring one along to your
Fargo hotel or your Chicago hotel or wherever you plan on staying. Kids get
scared if they wake up and forget where they are and hotel rooms can get very
dark.

The light will also help if they have to get up and use the bathroom in the
middle of the night.

7. Put crayons in plastic bags.

Remember that crayons and other kids' things melt. Put chocolate or other
treats in plastic bags or bring things that won't melt. Perhaps markers or
colored pencils will work better, and snack on things like granola bars.

Plastic bags also come in handy for storing things like wet swimsuits, trash in
the car or dirty laundry.

There are countless ways to make a family road trip go more smoothly. These are
just a few ideas to get you started. Have a good vacation!
