When you are looking to lose weight then you unquestionably want to attain your
goals. On the other hand, it is imperative that you properly design your goals
so that they are actually attainable. Regrettably, many will select goals that
are a somewhat beyond what would be a realistic goal. Consequently, it is
important to follow a few guidelines for realistic achievable weight loss goals.

Steer clear of a decision to drop an impractical amount of weight in a short
time period. True, everyone wishes those extra pounds would go away tomorrow.
Then again, there is only so much fat the body can burn in a short amount of
time. Bear in mind, one pound of stored fat is the same as 3600 calories. To
burn off or use up 3600 calories in one week is hard. To drop 36,000 is on the
whole impractical. Nevertheless, that is what many people wish to do when they
have goals of dropping 10lbs in a week. In general, 1 - 2 lbs a week is a
realistic amount.

FYI: this refers exclusively to burning 1-2 lbs of fat. You will often drop
8lbs or more in a week, but it is mostly water weight. When you cut back on
calories, you will be cutting back on the three elements that comprise food:
fat, carbs, and proteins. Carbohydrates promote water retention so any
reduction in the carbs you eat per week will lead to water weight loss.

Avoid falling into the trap of trying to spot reduce. No exercise can burn fat
in a specific area. This is called spot reduction and it can only be achieved
by means of surgery. Therefore, don't believe the propaganda about exercise
devices that can spot reduce. They do not work!

Crash and starvation diets are not a good choice. In essence, cutting an vast
amount of calories too quickly is self-defeating. On the whole, this style of
dieting sends the body into starvation mode. Meaning, the body's metabolism
will slow to a crawl in order to conserve the calories it takes in. In due
course, you could even store more food as fat even though you are ingesting
less calories!

It is smart to avoid too much exercise. This is closely related to starvation
diets in the sense it is a method that tries to do too much too quickly. In
general, with starvation diets the results of excessive exercise are
self-defeating. Furthermore, if you exercise too much you will significantly
increase your chance of injury. As well, you could develop burnout within a
short amount of time. In either case, you will end up less active which means
you will burn less calories. So it goes without saying, it is best to stick
with reasonable levels of exercise as opposed to over doing it.

Be persistent! Do not give up! All too often, people will complain that their
diet isn't working and just give up. Quitting is never a good idea. That is why
it is so important to stay the course toward achieving your weight loss goals.
With the correct effort, you will find the right diet and exercise program.
This will lead you to the results you desire.
