Getting the dog to not pull on the leash is not a big secret. It's all a matter of practice, time, patience and the tools used to perfect walking. Some training tools used to train a dog to walk on a loose leash include the Gentle Leader, the Halti, the choke collar, the prong collar and the anti-pull harness. The Gentle Leader works by fitting over the dog's nose. Like a horse halter, the human controls the head of the animal and therefore controls the animal. It is not comfortable or easy for the dog to pull while wearing a head collar. The dog Halti is very similar to the Gentle Leader. The main difference is that it has an extra strap that attaches to the dog's collar in case the dog somehow manages to get his or her nose out of the Halti - it happens! A lot of dog's will not like wearing a head collar (Gentle Leader or Halti). These dogs will protest and put up a fight, rubbing their noses on the ground and pawing at their faces. However, if the owner just keeps right on walking, the dog will eventually realize that the head collar is no big deal. If the dog does try to fight the head collar, it's best to just keep moving forward and not to stop and give in to the dog. The person is leading the walk, not the dog! The choke collar works because by correcting the dog when he or she pulls or lunges. This collar is meant to quickly tighten and then release when the human "pops" the leash to correct the dog. The choke collar is perhaps the most commonly used tool and that means it is the most misunderstood and the most likely to be used incorrectly. If the dog has a tight collar around his or her neck the entire time, the dog will not be able to learn anything. This defeats the purpose of the choke collar. The choke collar is meant as a training tool, not a choking device. The prong collar is very similar to the choke collar. In some ways it is much safer for the dog because it prevents those strong, stubborn dogs from pulling and choking themselves. Some dogs will just pull and pull and pull no matter what and can hurt their throats. A prong collar is designed to tighten when the owner gives a correction. This pinching sensation is uncomfortable for the dog and teaches the dog not to pull or lunge. With time, the dog should be able to be weaned off of the prong collar and onto a regular buckle collar. Finally, there is the anti-pull harness. This harness is designed to prevent the dog from pulling. It's not always very effective because big, powerful dogs need more control than a harness. However, some people claim this tool works best for their dogs. Each tool can work for the right dog.
